About Linguas Australia

Linguas Australia is Melbourne’s weekly language exchange and social night. Two nights a week, Linguas Language Exchange mixes language practice with a friendly nightlife atmosphere at La Di Da, so you can practise, meet people and still hear yourself talk.

In one sentence

A big, welcoming language exchange that feels like a social night instead of a classroom.

Quick snapshot of Linguas Language Exchange

  • Hundreds of people each week across both nights.
  • All levels welcome. You can be a beginner or fluent.
  • Friendly, low pressure and not a dating event.
  • Run by Intermingle Australia, a Melbourne based events group.

What Linguas Language Exchange is

A weekly language social, not a classroom

Linguas is built for people who want real conversations. You still practise grammar and vocabulary, but the focus is human. You sit at tables, meet new people and talk about normal things like work, travel, life and the city.

We use badges and flags so people can quickly see which languages you speak and which ones you want to practise. You are free to move between groups and switch languages during the night. There is a clear structure so it is not chaotic, but it always feels like a social event more than a class.

People come back because it becomes part of their week. You get a familiar place, familiar faces and a steady flow of new people arriving in Melbourne.

A typical night in three steps

1. Arrive and get set up

You check in, grab a name badge and choose flags for the languages you speak and want to practise. Staff can guide you to a table that fits your level.

2. Talk, swap stories and languages

Groups talk in the target language or mix languages as needed. You can stay with one table or move around during the night. Simple prompts and games are available if you want them.

3. Stay as long as you like

Things usually start calmer and pick up as more people arrive. Many people stay late, make new friends and then come back each week as a regular.

Who Linguas Australia is for

International students

If you have just arrived in Melbourne and want to practise English or keep your own language alive, Linguas gives you a regular place to land each week and meet people from many schools and backgrounds.

Locals and long term residents

Many locals come because they speak another language at home or studied one at school and do not want to lose it. It is also a way to connect with the city beyond your normal circle.

Backpackers and working holiday makers

Backpackers and working holiday makers use Linguas Australia to build a social base in Melbourne. You can meet people quickly, then keep catching up outside the event during the week.

How we run Linguas Language Exchange and Social

What to expect

  • Tables grouped roughly by language and level so you do not feel lost.
  • Music at a level where you can still talk without shouting.
  • Clear signage, flags and badges to help you find people with similar interests.
  • Friendly volunteers and staff ready to introduce you if you arrive alone.
  • Theme nights and special events across the year, but the core format stays familiar.

You do not need to register in advance for a normal night. Just check our events, pick a date and turn up.

What Linguas is not

  • Not a formal language school. There are no exams or homework.
  • Not a speed dating or dating event. People do meet partners sometimes, but that is not the purpose and not how we promote it.
  • Not about heavy intoxication. Drinks are available, but the goal is clear conversation and a safe environment.

The aim is simple. Make Melbourne feel smaller and more connected for people who care about languages and culture.

Who runs Linguas Australia

Intermingle Australia

Linguas Australia (Linguas Language Exchange) is a trading name of Intermingle Australia. Intermingle is a Melbourne based events group that runs social and creative events for people who like meaningful nights out.

The focus is on events where you can actually talk. That includes language exchange, philosophy and story based events, and other formats that mix nightlife energy with clear structure and respect.

Over the years Linguas has grown into a community. Many regulars have volunteered, hosted tables, helped new arrivals and kept the event grounded in what matters: people, conversation and feeling like you belong in the city.

Working with schools and partners

Linguas Australia often works with language schools, universities and community groups that want to give their students or members a real world place to practise.

Common questions

Do I need to book?

For a standard Linguas night you can usually just turn up. If a particular night needs tickets or has a cap on numbers it will be clear on the event listing.

Can I come alone?

Yes. A large percentage of people arrive alone, especially when they are new to Melbourne. Our team and regulars are used to helping people find a table and settle in.

What if my English or other language is not good?

That is normal. The event exists to help people improve. You can choose a slower table and you can switch back to English when you need to. No one is expecting perfect grammar.

Is there a dress code?

Standard smart casual bar clothing is fine. Just wear something you feel comfortable in for talking to new people.
